The Midlands is occupying an increasingly strategic role in supplying to the global aerospace industry.
Constantly striving for innovation, Midlands based companies are proving to be increasingly successful in developing and supplying complex sub-systems and components for the global market. It is companies like Birmingham based Bromford Industries, a supplier of performance critical parts for engines and landing gear to the aerospace industry, which is testament to the thriving manufacturing industry in the Midlands. Bromford Industries has recently secured a multi-million pound contract which will involve the business making considerable investment in plant and machinery and will bolster an apprentice training programme.
The $60m contract has been secured with Messier Bigatti Dowty, part of the SAFRAN Group of global organisations involved in the aerospace sector, and will see Bromford Industries supplying components and sub-assemblies for landing gear for the new Airbus A350 and A330-340. Messier Bigatti Dowty is currently the world’s largest manufacturer of aircraft landing gear. The contract is to extend over a ten year period. Mike Smith Chief Executive of the group said: “I am very proud of this achievement and my team are delighted to secure such an opportunity.” The contract also reflects the strength of the relationship which the company has built up with Messier Bugatti Dowty over a number of years. Furthermore, the group is also headed by an experienced team which has successfully led the company’s endeavours to offer engineering solutions in difficult-to-work materials to demanding tolerances, which are delivered at pace and with competitive advantage to a range of customers.
As a private equity backed business, Darwin Private Equity have provided the funds to support investment and growth which dovetails into Bromford Industries long term strategic plans. In addition to landing gear, the privately owned enterprise is also active in the aero engines and industrial gas turbines markets. Bromford already boast an impressive customer base including Rolls-Royce and Siemens and since 2009 has sought to develop and grow their existing lists with new international clients.
With around 300 employees, Bromford Industries also offers an apprentice training programme to support the development and recruitment of the next generation in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. Schemes like this are vital in avoiding the risk of the country facing a shortage of engineering skills and a general lack of interest in pursuing careers in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. It is companies like this, which commit to investing in their equipment and their people which will continue to successfully compete for contracts against other leading global manufacturing organisations. Moreover, as they progress from a Midlands based machining group to a globally recognised precision engineering service provider, they will continue to fly the flag for Midland’s manufacturing across the globe.
