Birmingham Metropolitan College’s Boxing Academy student, Connor Jones, has bagged an All England National Boxing title and has been named in Great Britain’s Junior Boxing Squad – proving that he’s punching above his weight in the sport!
Connor,17 from Brierley Hill, joined the Boxing Academy last year and is studying for a Level 2 qualification in Sport, at the same time continuing to play the sport he excels in whilst studying at college. He has a string of accolades under his belt including West Midlands Young Boxer of the Year and he is West Midlands Junior Amateur Boxing Association Champion.
Stella Raphael-Reeves, Birmingham Metropolitan College’s Director of Sport, said: “Connor joined the Boxing Academy last year and has gone from strength to strength – quite literally! He was named Boxer of the Year at the Academy and has subsequently gone on to bag title after title, fighting hard for the ultimate goal of boxing for his country with the national squad. We have a great partnership in place with the Lions Boxing Club in Brierley Hill where Boxing Academy students benefit from professional coaching by Great Britain Squad Coach, Bob Dillon, and his experienced team. The unique opportunity to bag a qualification whilst playing the sport they love is a real draw for young people in the region and it’s wonderful to see our students reaching the top of their game whilst studying with us.”
Connor said: “I have been boxing since I was six – visiting the Lions Boxing Club with my dad. I’m really pleased that the Boxing Academy allows me to continue to box alongside my studies – it’s the best of both worlds and I can’t wait to represent my country in the Junior Boxing Squad.”
