A Redditch-based Electromechanical Engineering company, System Support Engineers Ltd (SSE), has won a new contract with Europe’s biggest alumina refinery, Rusal Aughinish, in Ireland.
SSE was originally formed in 1994 by then and current Director Bob Smyth, a former GE and GEFanuc engineer of 20 years, who now co-runs the company with his son, Ben. Having worked with the industry’s leading CNC and PLC control manufacturers, Bob and the rest of SSE have dedicated themselves to providing top-quality control system design and manufacturing, with the integration of the latest CNC and PLC equipment.
SSE are specialists that provide bespoke services in a wide range of fields, including electrical engineering, electronic repairs, mechanical engineering and more, the recognition of which landed them one of their biggest jobs to date.
Rusal, the Russian aluminium company that is now the largest in the world with 47 plants and over 67,000 employees globally, approached SSE regarding the automation and rebuilding of a Summit Vertical Turning Lathe (or VTL), a machine used to refurbish valve bodies up to 88”.
SSE were tasked with assuring it could perform at maximum capacity by completely rebuilding it, fitting a Siemens 828D Turnkey CNC package and modifying the machine to suit, removing gearbox’s, fitting servo’s and regrinding all of the slide ways. All part reassembly was done in the SSE workshop in Redditch before shipping it to Ireland. The machine is now in production in their Valve body repair workshop.
The deal has forged a strong connection with a big client and cemented SSE as specialist experts in the CNC retrofit industry, paving the way for greater deals in the future.
